The Ontario Ministry of Energy announced today that the government is beginning negotiations with Bruce Power to restart the two units, rated at 904 megawatts each. Unit 2 has been down since 1995 and unit 1 since 1997. The ministry said David Santangeli, a managing director of Energy Fundamentals Group Inc. (EFG), will advise the government on the potential for negotiating an agreement with Bruce Power and will manage any subsequent negotiations process. EFG, an investment firm specializing in the energy infrastructure sector, has been assisting the government for several months with various electricity supply options, the ministry said. Bruce Power announced a feasibility study earlier this year that included examining the restart of Bruce-1 and -2. In the mid-1990s, then-owner Ontario Hydro estimated the cost of restoring unit 2 at (Cdn)$500-million. Two other reactors at the Bruce A station, units 3 and 4, have returned to service since late last year after being shut in 1998. There are four operating reactors at the Bruce B station. ------------
